March for Midwives

Mar 4, 2016 | 8:53 AM

Where’s My Midwife in this Election Campaign?

Big bellied pregnant women, new moms and hopefuls to be pregnant have one question for this provincial election campaign:  Where’s my Midwife?

Saturday, March 5, 2016 at noon to 4pm is a March for Midwives.

We will be marching simultaneously in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, North Battleford and Swift Current.

Midwives are qualified health practitioners hired by the provincial government, through the health regions.

One midwife can save the healthcare system $160,000 each year.  For details on how, see our attachment.

A midwife assisted hospital birth results in a cost savings of $800.

A midwife home birth results in a cost savings of $1800. (Ontario Provincial Ministry of Health, 2011)

In Saskatoon there are 80 women currently on the midwife waiting list.  All of these women are likely to be denied any midwife care.

Outside the health regions for Saskatoon, Regina and Swift Current women cannot access midwife services at all.

Women are demanding midwife care, and the care is a cost saving to the government.  Having a midwife should not be privileged care.  Every woman deserves access to this maternity care.
