Breastfeeding Week

Oct 2, 2016 | 11:03 AM

October 1, 2016 marked the beginning of Canada’s Breastfeeding Week!

The World Health Organization and Unicef declared World Breastfeeding Week 2016’s message as “Breastfeeding: A Key to Sustainable Development”.

What does this mean?

We need to change how we view breastfeeding as a society. Breastfeeding is the #1 primary disease prevention that mothers can provide to their infants. We need to look at breastfeeding as a renewable resource that costs very little to produce and provides many long term benefits to babies for their future health. We need to educate society that artificial breast milk substitutes (widely known as formula) do not come close to the ingredients found in human breast milk, despite what formula manufacturers advertise to society.

How do we do this?

By informing, engaging, and supporting expectant mothers and lactating mothers to think about breastfeeding as the safest, cost-effective and optimal disease prevention they can give to their babies! If you are a new dad, you know a new mother who is needing extra support, or you are a new mother yourself an excellent resource is contacting your local public health unit!

Public health nurses have extended training to provide breastfeeding assistance and support to new and expectant mothers and their families. You can call us at (306) 236-1570 for any questions or for assistance. We also provide a drop in clinic on Friday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. for baby weights and for moms to address any questions or concerns they may have. Great opportunity to access breastfeeding knowledge!
