North Kings Auto reopens after fire in early March

Mar 26, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Three weeks after a fire claimed a local business, North Kings Automotive has re-opened in a new location.

A fire broke out in the early morning hours of March 5, and firefighters were on scene for several hours fighting the blaze. The fire department said the cause was accidental, and the details of the exact cause will not be released. Owner Derek Joseph said when the opportunity came to rent a former auto shop at 610 First Ave. W., he wanted to take it.

“I needed to keep the business going,” he said.

At this point, Joseph said he is unsure if the auto shop and parts store will move back to rebuild at the original location, 301 First Ave. E.

“We’ll just go day-by-day; I don’t know for sure yet,” Joseph said. “Anything can happen, obviously. It’s a rollercoaster ride.”

He said the last few weeks have been busy for the staff, who have been following up with insurance, relocating, moving services, and keeping their clientele informed of updates. He said he appreciated the support from the community after the fire.

“It’s been busy. I never had time to stop,” Joseph said. “Starting a business is tedious and I haven’t had time to take a break. The support from everyone helped me stay motivated.”
