Wild rice is an important economic crop for First Nations and Métis people across Western Canada. The industry is particularly significant in Northern Saskatchewan, where approximately 70 per cent of the Canadian crop originates. Long-time La Ronge resident and Métis journalist, Derek Cornet is leading the development of the ‘Our way, Our words’ stories with an emphasis on respectful, meaningful coverage, and editorial priorities that reflect the North’s diversity and realities.

Derek has been reporting news in Northern Saskatchewan since 2013 and has travelled extensively across the north, building connections with each community along the way. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies through the University of Saskatchewan, as well as a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Regina.
