Stanley Mission man accused of creating food scare

Mar 29, 2016 | 5:34 PM

A 48-year-old man from Stanley Mission is facing charges, in connection to  a story that has left a bad taste in peoples’ mouths.

Morton Cook is accused of telling staff at a grocery store in La Ronge that someone used a needle to contaminate the food with HIV.

The police investigation revealed the story was unfounded.

Cook will appear in court on Thursday, charged with public mischief, and obstructing a police officer.

The Mamawetan Churchill River Health Region was contacted as a precaution.

Medical Health Officer James Irvine said there is very little risk of transmitting HIV by eating food, because HIV is a blood-borne virus.

As a precaution, stores in La Ronge, Air Ronge, and Lac La Ronge Indian Band, including Sucker River and Stanley Mission removed food products such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and baked goods from their shelves.

All foods currently on display are considered safe to eat because they were in storage or have recently been received by the stores.

The health region said there is no need to dispose of recently purchased food and no need to return food products to the stores.
