New fish processing plant coming to Île-à-la-Crosse

Changes are underway to the fishing industry in the northern community of Île-à-la-Crosse which has plans to create more jobs, put more money in fisherman’s pockets and grow the town of almost 1,400.

For the last couple years, Mayor Duane Favel said the town, along with Sakitawak Development Corporation have been working towards a fish processing plant.

With the $2.1 million in place for the project, stakeholders and community members gathered on Thursday, July 21 for a sod turning ceremony.

“We hope to stimulate the fishing industry and attract more young people into the industry and hopefully grow the plant where the entire region benefits from it,” Favel said.

Currently there is a fish processing plant in Ile a La Crosse. Fishermen and the plant have an agreement where fish are brought and sold directly to Fresh Water Fisheries out of Winnipeg.

The new plant will change the relationship with Fresh Water Fisheries as it will be a federally certified fish processing plant. This means fishermen will have the ability to market their own fish and sell within the province, country and even internationally instead of solely to Fresh Water Fisheries.

“The community is excited in terms of moving forward, attracting more jobs to the community and growing the fishing industry,” Favel said.

He added the current plant will become obsolete. Favel is unsure what will happen with the structure but said the economic arm in the municipal government is exploring possibilities.

There is no estimated completion date, however, business will continue as usual with Fresh Water Fisheries until the plant is complete.

Favel said he is optimistically hoping to have the plant complete by the upcoming fishing season.
