Drunk driver who killed family of 4 in Sask. sentenced to 10 years in prison

A Saskatoon judge has sentenced a drunk driver who killed a family of four from Saskatchewan to 10 years in prison.

With remand credit, that works out to nine years and two months behind bars for Catherine McKay. The 49-year-old woman will also face a 12-year driving ban once she’s released.

Jordan Van de Vorst, his wife Chanda and their two kids – two-year-old Miguire and five-year-old Kamryn – were killed in a collision at Highway 11 and Wanuskewin Road on Jan. 3, 2016.

On June 8, McKay pleaded guilty to four counts of impaired driving causing death.

That same day, Louis Van de Vorst, Jordan’s father, said the high rate of drinking and driving in Saskatchewan needed to be taken more seriously.

He said he hoped their tragic case would lead the way to show the need to be responsible when people choose to drink.

“I want to see a sentence that reflects a severity and how seriously people should be taking this,” he said. “If I can use the terms precedent-setting, I would want it to be precedent-setting.”
