Favel seeks re-election in Ile-a-La-Crosse

He’s been leading the northern-village of Ile-a-La-Crosse for the past decade, and later this month Duane Favel is seeking another term as mayor.

Born and raised in the northern village, Favel said he helped establish a strong working relationship with residents and organizations. If re-elected, he said he would continue the work he’s already started improving roads, attracting business and growing the community.

“I’ve always said, as a municipality, we don’t get an operational budget that allows us to do too much other than run the core portions of our community like water, sewer, roads and sanitation,” he said. “We have to lobby hard and develop relationships with organizations, government, industry, and community if we’re going to be able to attract (people and business), and bring finances to the community to move forward with some of the ideas we have.”

In the last decade, Favel is proud of the youth centre built through a partnership with the local school division, a trades program for Grade 12 students and recent graduates, and the group home for people with cognitive disabilities.

“When you look at Ile-a-La-Crosse, there’s a lot of strong leaders within the community and being able to bring those leaders together to work as a collective only enhances our abilities to get things done,” he said.

Louis Gardiner is the sole candidate opposing Favel for mayor. However, there are 23 residents vying for six councillor chairs in the northern village.

Kenyon Ahenakew, Vince Ahenakew, Beckie Belanger, Randy Belanger, Vye Bouvier, William Caisse, Marlene Chartier, Edna Daigneault, Yvonne Daigneault, Jimmy Durocher, Martin Durocher Sr., Peter Durocher, Donny Favel, Ryan Favel, Napoleon Gardiner, Michael Hodgson, Boone Laliberte, Shayne Laliberte, Myra Malboeuf, Bev McLean, Noel McLean, Sandra Pelletier, and Gerald Roy are seeking election as councillors.

Voters cast their ballots on Oct. 26 at the events centre.
