La Ronge mourns after three young girls take their lives
The communities of La Ronge and Stanley Mission are in mourning after three young girls tragically took their own lives in a span of four days last week.
Two of the girls from Stanley Mission were found before Thanksgiving, while a third from La Ronge was taken to the intensive care unit in Saskatoon after attempting to take her own life, but died shortly after.
Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson said the community is in “a state of crisis.” In a statement, she said there have been nine additional suicide attempts in the community in the week since and more than 20 youth are considered at risk.
Emergency mental health workers are in both communities to offer 24-hour support to families and youth in need.
