Before and after school program starts in Rapid View

Oct 21, 2016 | 10:05 AM

Green Acres School, in the hamlet of Rapid View, has recently started a before and after school program as one way to increase student enrollment.

Starting as early as 7:45 a.m. and as late as 5:45 p.m. each Monday to Friday, students will be watched outside of school hours. During their extra time, students play games, interact with classmates and get an opportunity to work on homework with peers’ help.

In 2015-16, the student population of Green Acres was 42 kids. This year, 45 students are enrolled. Duane Hauk, Northwest School Division director of education said the before and after school program was brought forward by the Rapid View review committee as a way to encourage students to attend Green Acres School instead of being driven into Meadow Lake by parents.

“It’s just started and staff are hoping for more students to be involved in it,” Hauk said.

Last year, Green Acres School was put under review by the NWSD to determine if it was viable to keep the school open.

A review committee comprised of parents, staff and community members created a plan to increase enrollment. NWSD board trustees then voted to keep the school open.
