While the election results are still unofficial, Meadow Lake’s Loretta King is looking forward to learning her role and representing the region as the local Métis Nation – Saskatchewan representative.

The region is known as the Western Region 1, and includes Meadow Lake, Chitek Lake, Glaslyn, and Leoville.

Glen McCallum of Pinehouse was elected as president during the May 27 election. Gerald Morin of Saskatoon was elected as vice president, Ashley Norton of Buffalo Narrows as secretary and Mary Ann Morin of Prince Albert as Treasurer.

According to the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan election website, King won with a total of 205 votes, 15 more than incumbent Michael Edward Bell who was at 190.

“It’ll be a new learning experience,” King said. “This was my first electoral run. I felt it was important to run so we can move forward.”

King said she’s looking forward to finding out what the needs of the residents of the region are.

“I know that in our region we don’t have local branches that are up and running, so part of my goal is to create interest there, and hopefully some communities will be encouraged to start their own,” she said.

Once officially sworn in, she will connect with the provincial body as ther regional voice for the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan.

“As far as I understand, I will be attending the regular provincial meetings,” she said. “I’ll act as a liaison to all of the locals with in my district and bring ideas and concerns forward between both parties.”

For King it’s a new step, but it is one that follows her family’s path.

“I think we have a lot to look forward to as the Nation improves and grows stronger,” King said. “For me as well, both of my grandfathers and my grandmother and some other family members were pretty strong Métis Nation – Saskatchewan leaders in their day, so that’s another reason why I decided to run.”
