POLICE ACTIVITY BACK TO NORMAL IN GTA

Information about a “potential risk” in the Greater Toronto Area led to an increase in police presence in Toronto’s downtown core on Thursday, but police would not specify what information they had received, or what their officers were looking for. They said the situation and their response were relatively common occurrences. Police said late Thursday that the force had “resumed normal operations,” but that the public will “continue to see a police presence around the Rogers Centre” as part of a downtown security plan.

ONTARIO THRONE SPEECH HIGHLIGHTS CAMPAIGN PLEDGES

Ontario’s new Progressive Conservative government has vowed to bring in sweeping changes to restore public trust in a throne speech that played up promises made by Premier Doug Ford during the spring election campaign. The speech set out a road map for the majority Tory government’s term, pledging to cut taxes, provide long-term funding for the health-care system and slash government waste.

ALBERTA’S UCP RETAINS TWO RIDINGS IN BYELECTIONS

Alberta’s Opposition United Conservatives held on to a pair of ridings in byelections Thursday night. UCP candidate Devin Dreeshen took Innisfail-Sylvan Lake while Laila Goodridge won Fort McMurray-Conklin, both handily beating NDP challengers. The balance of power in the Alberta’s legislature is unchanged, with Premier Rachel Notley’s New Democrats still holding 54 of the 87 seats.

TROPICAL STORM CHRIS SPEEDS OFF INTO ATLANTIC

Environment Canada says centre of post-tropical storm Chris was northeast of Newfoundland early Friday and speeding off into the Atlantic. The agency said the rain carried in by the storm had and strong and gusty winds mainly along the east coast were diminishing. Heavy pounding surf and swell along the south coast and the southwest coast were to gradually moderate through the day.
