TRUDEAU MUM ON BERNIER BOMBSHELL

Conservatives, from leader Andrew Scheer on down, are predicting that Maxime Bernier’s decision to quit their party and start his own will end up helping Justin Trudeau’s Liberals win re-election next year. But one notable person isn’t taking that bet: Trudeau himself. The prime minister was careful to avoid wading into the Conservatives’ civil war. “Over these past three days, I’ve remained focused with my team on how we’re going to continue to serve Canadians,” Trudeau said at a news conference in B.C. Thursday.

SASK. JUDGE RESERVES DECISION ON PROTEST CAMP

A judge has reserved her decision on the request by the Saskatchewan government for an order to evict Indigenous protesters who have been camping in teepees on the legislature grounds. The first teepee at the Justice For Our Stolen Children camp went up six months ago and more have been set up as campers protest what they say is a disproportionate number of Indigenous children apprehended by child-welfare workers.

HEALTH CARE TO DOMINATE DAY TWO OF N.B. CAMPAIGN

Health care is expected to dominate the New Brunswick election campaign today. Liberal Premier Brian Gallant will make a health care announcement at 9 a.m. in Fredericton. Progressive Conservative Leader Blaine Higgs is set to make an aging care announcement in Moncton, while the New Democrat’s Jennifer McKenzie will visit a hospice in Saint John. Election day is Sept. 24.

DAY TWO OF QUEBEC ELECTION CAMPAIGN

The for main party leaders criss-crossed Quebec Thursday to launch a 39-day election campaign. Incumbent Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard warned voters that changing the ruling party could compromise four years of sacrifice and hard work that helped bring about the current strong economic growth. The Coalition Avenir Quebec is leading in public opinion polls, and leader Francois Legault told prospective voters that he believes Quebec can “do better” with a nationalist government.
