TRUDEAU TO SPEAK AT WOMEN’S SUMMIT IN TORONTO

Justin Trudeau is expected to take the stage today for a second year in a row at a Toronto summit highlighting the work of prominent women from around the world. The prime minister and some members of his cabinet will take part in the Women in the World Canada summit, a one-day event bringing together politicians, artists, journalists and other high-profile individuals. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is to participate in a panel titled “Taking on the tyrant” about the global rise of populism and “authoritarian strong men leaders.”

DECISION EXPECTED ON TORONTO COUNCIL CUT CHALLENGE

An Ontario judge is expected to rule today on the City of Toronto’s legal challenge of provincial legislation slashing the size of city council nearly in half. A spokeswoman says the city has been notified that Ontario Superior Court Justice Edward Belobaba will send his decision to legal counsel at 8 a.m. today. The council-cutting legislation passed earlier this month and aligns the city’s ward map with federal ridings in time for the Oct. 22 municipal election.

SHANIA TWAIN BIG WINNER AT CCMA AWARDS

Man, she feels like a winner! Shania Twain proved nothing could stop her at last night’s Canadian Country Music Association Awards as she picked up the most accolades of the night — four in all — after serving as host of the festivities. The Timmins, Ont.-raised superstar joined in a celebration of her career that included winning the Generation Award and fans’ choice award. Twain’s latest album “Now” was also recognized for its appeal across borders, winning the top selling album and top selling Canadian album prizes.
