LIBERALS GATHER FOR CAUCUS RETREAT IN SASKATOON

Liberal backbenchers are pushing for action on gun violence and irregular border crossers as they prepare for the resumption of Parliament next week — and an election a year from now. Banning handguns and assault weapons and faster processing of border crossers’ refugee claims are among the top recommendations Liberal MPs say they intend to raise with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his ministers in Saskatoon, where they’ll be gathering today at a caucus retreat to plot strategy for the fall parliamentary sitting.

BERNIER LEADERSHIP BACKERS JOIN HIS PARTY

A dragon, a marijuana activist and a former Tory MP who backed Maxime Bernier’s leadership campaign are now throwing their weight behind his fledgling new political party. Former Dragon’s Den personality and merchant banker Michael Wekerle, well-known pot activist Marc Emery and former British Columbia Conservative MP Gurmant Grewal all tell The Canadian Press they are backing Bernier’s adventure. Bernier announced last month he was leaving the Conservatives to start his own party.

CANADA POST WORKERS AWAIT STRIKE VOTE RESULTS

Results of two separate votes by postal workers are expected to be released today. Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, CUPW, wrapped up voting Sunday on a call by the union for a strike mandate after months of contract talks failed to produce a collective agreement. If CUPW members voted in favour of job action, they could legally strike by Sept. 26, but Canada Post would also be legally able to lock them out on the same date.

CAMPAIGN PRODS MEN TO GET PROSTATE CANCER TESTING

Prostate Cancer Canada is hoping humour will encourage men to get tested for the potentially deadly disease. The campaign references historical and fictional characters in the form of latex gloves. Called “Famous Fingers,” the campaign features 13 gloves — index fingers raised — that are hand-painted with iconic designs for such luminaries as Babe Ruth, Napoleon, Winston Churchill and King Tut.
