Meadow Lake gearing up for Winter Festival

Feb 19, 2019 | 2:00 PM

The Meadow Lake community is getting ready to host its popular Winter Festival next month.

The event will run from Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 10.

Cliff McKay, on the organizing committee, said the festival will be held a little later this year with hopes for warmer weather.

“Come out and join in, and participate if you can,” he said. “There is lots of time to get into some of those events.”

He said about 500 people attended last year and organizers would like to increase the numbers this year.

“We moved it to March this year so we are hoping for better weather,” McKay added.

Some of the new activities this year include UTV races and four-cylinder car races.

“They may also have RC racing – (with) remote control cars,” McKay said.

To participate in the festival, people will need to purchase a Winter Festival button for $10, which will allow them into all the events. The buttons are available at participating businesses throughout Meadow Lake.

Some of the events also include prizes.

“The support has been great from the community,” McKay said.

The festival will start March 8 with ice sculpture judging. There will also be floor hockey games at participating schools.

For the kick off, organizers plan a hot dog roast at 6 p.m. at the Stampede Grounds infield. The barbecue is free for children 12 years of age and under. Adults will need to show their festival button to attend.

Attendees can also join in the sleigh rides at 7 p.m. at the Stampede Grounds. At dusk there will be a fireworks display.

On Saturday, March 9, the SSRA Pro Race Series snowmobile drag races will take place at 12 p.m. at the Stampede Grounds.

Also starting at 12 p.m., families will have a chance to learn how to make snow candy. They can also explore the treasure hill and discover snow art the Stampede Grounds.

Chucksled races will be held at 3 p.m. at the Meadow Lake and District Arena.

Then, at 7:30 p.m. attendees can take in a talent show at Meadow Lake Arena Mezzanine.

On Sunday, March 10, people can take part in the “Wylie Coyote Snowmobile Rally.” Registration and the event start time are set for 10 a.m. at the Lion’s Den.

“We’ll head out South of Meadow Lake on the groomed trails,” McKay said.

People can also try their hand at the ice fishing derby starting at 12 p.m. The Meadow Lake access is North of the lake by the MLTC (Meadow Lake Tribal Council) Shop.

Car races and UTV (off road, side-by-side vehicle) races will take place at 11 a.m. at the Stampede Grounds.
