Game of Thrones aired its last episode on Sunday, and one Saskatoon woman was lucky enough to be more than just a fan of the HBO series.

University of Saskatchewan student Keara Carter scored a role in the final season while studying astro-physics overseas in Northern Ireland.

The 23-year-old said she had no idea the show was filming in Belfast until she took a Game of Thrones fan tour, and met the guide.

“I approached the tour guide leader who was an extra there and he kind of hooked me up and submitted my picture for the show,” Carter said.

She got a call from the show a couple weeks later with an offer and spent part of 2018 filming the final season.

Carter plays a zombie character in episode two called, “A White Walker”, and returns in episodes five and six as a peasant in Flea Bottom.

“They first they asked me if I watched the show, and I do watch the show and I really like it so I knew kind of what they were looking for.”

You have to look hard to spot Carter on screen. The prosthetics and makeup used on the show makes her almost unrecognizable.

Carter said with such a huge following, the show went to great lengths to make sure spoilers didn’t leak out, including putting special stickers on everyone’s cell phones.

“They would actually check your phone at the end of every day and make sure that the sticker was still securely in place.”

“If they caught you that your sticker was damaged then you would be off the show that day and they would not call you back.”

Carter said it was a thrill to rub shoulders with some of the cast even though they weren’t allowed to approach them.

“They don’t want any crazy fans or anything coming up to them, but all the cast I met were all very friendly and they would usually come up and have a coffee with you.”

Carter managed to stay within the rules and was invited back to film the prequel in a couple of months.
