Canada’s Felicia Spencer to face former featherweight champ Cris Cyborg at UFC 240

Unbeaten Canadian Felicia (Feenom) Spencer will face former featherweight champion Cris Cyborg at UFC 240 in July in Edmonton.

The July 27 Rogers Place bout will be the first for Cyborg (20-2-0 with one no contest) since she lost her title to fellow Brazilian Amanda Nunes in a 51-second knockout at UFC 232 in December.

Spencer, a Montreal native who trains in Orlando, Fla., made an impressive UFC debut May 18 when she choked out Australian Megan Anderson on a Fight Night card in Rochester, N.Y.

The bout was a battle of former Invicta FC featherweight champions.

The five-foot-six Spencer was giving away six inches in height and four inches in reach to Anderson.

After some initial striking, Spencer (7-0-0) pulled Anderson down to the ground, forced her to roll over with punches and clamped onto her back. Then she flattened out the lanky Australian, sunk in a rear-naked choke and forced Anderson to tap at 3:24 of the first round.

“I’ve been doing this my whole life. That’s what I do,” said Spencer, a Canadian flag over her shoulder.

Spencer, 28, won the vacant 145-pound Invicta title in November when she submitted Pam Sorenson at Invicta FC 32.

A middleweight bout between Marc-Andre (Power-Bar) Barriault of Gatineau, Que., and Poland’s Krzysztof Jotko has also been added to the Edmonton show. 

Barriault (11-2-0) is coming off a decision loss to American Andrew Sanchez on May 4. Jotko (20-4-0) snapped a three-game losing streak with a win in April over Macedonia’s Alen Amedovski.

In the previously announced main event, Max (Blessed) Holloway will put his UFC featherweight title on the line against former lightweight title-holder Frankie (The Answer) Edgar.
