Glen Sinclair plans to walk from Meadow Lake to North Battleford to raise money for the travel expenses for his cancer treatment.

“This isn’t for cancer, it’s for people to be able to make the trip for their cancer appointment,” Sinclair said. “Any funds that come toward me will help me to buy whatever I need to make it to my appointments from now on.”

The 61-year-old starts from Garfunkel’s Gourmet Grill on July 8 at 9:30 a.m. Sinclair plans to walk over 150 kilometres in three days ending at Battleford’s Indian and Métis Friendship Centre on July 11.

Sinclair was diagnosed with liver cancer stemming from hepatitis B and cirrhosis in the liver. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, on average 19 per cent of people diagnosed with liver cancer will survive for at least five years.

Sinclair has received treatment in Saskatoon but missed his last appointment in April because his truck was stolen.

“One of the biggest things that ever happened in Meadow Lake was when we lost our transportation by Greyhound bus,” Sinclair said. “If you don’t have the means to find [transportation] you’re out of luck for making your appointments.”

Sinclair considers himself an independent person and doesn’t want to rely on his family to help him make his appointments.

“I’ve always thought you’ve got two legs, you’ve got a mouth, you’ve got two arms, make use of them.”

He won’t be walking alone as Sinclair said some friends will join him for part of his walk.

“At first I wasn’t so sure how many people were going to walk with me,” Sinclair said. “And then all of a sudden it just grew. To the point that I got people that want to walk with me and then I started getting sponsorships from North Battleford and Saskatoon. They all want to see this go through.”

Donations to Glen Sinclair can be made by contacting him via email at glensnclr@gmail.com.

“I put a heavy load on my shoulder to do this but as stubborn and bullheaded as I am, I’ll make it. I know I will.”
