Meadow Lake’s Logan Gorst entered the history books after becoming the 2019 Rangeland Derby Champion at the Calgary Stampede on Sunday.

“I owe it all to the horses,” Gorst said. “They performed unbelievably all through the 10 days. I wouldn’t change a thing and they never did a thing wrong.”

Gorst raced against fellow Saskatchewan riders Todd Bapiste, Luke Tournier and Vern Nolin in the final heat on July 14. Gorst, riding for Century Downs Racetrack and Casino, ended with a time of 1:10.87 edging out Bapiste with a time of 1:11.30 and Tournier with 1:11.47.

Gorst not only grabbed the $100,000 Rangeland Derby Champion prize but he was also the 2019 aggregate champion and received the Safe Driver award for being the least penalized driver.

Gorst said it’s a dream come true after winning the Rangeland Derby for the first time.

“I’m just happy to get the Gorst name into the record books,” Gorst said. “And the support back home from family and friends, it’s a pretty good feeling.”

Gorst said he’s going to be focusing on the world title and wants to catch up to the current leader, Vern Nolin.

“It’s going good,” Gorst said. “I’m sitting third in the world, so we got a chance. Vern Nolin is leading it and he’s got a pretty good lead but we’ll do the best we can to try and catch him.”

Nolin has 720.5 points in the world standing while Gorst has 642.5.

Gorst has a two-week break to let his horses rest before heading to Strathmore. The World Professional Chuckwagon Association Pro Tour’s next event is at the Strathmore Stampede from August 2 to 5.
