M.L. hosting minor baseball provincials this weekend

The Meadow Lake Sox are hosting the Under-13 Tier 2 Provincial Championships this weekend at Lions Park.

The Sox are coming off a big win after they hosted a tournament in Meadow Lake earlier this month and finished in first place.

Head Coach Regan Beck said this year the team is a contender for the top spot.

“We’ve had a very good spring and summer so far and we think we have a nice chance but of course these are tournaments and anything can happen in a tournament,” Beck said. “We know that there’s some good teams coming here. Teams we’ve seen at other tournaments. Teams we know are high quality so, we’re hoping to have our best performance.”

Beck said there’s been a resurgence in minor baseball in Meadow Lake. He said the teams are getting better but have fallen short of winning provincials in the past few years.

“We’ve been very close but we just haven’t been able to get over that last hurdle,” Beck said.

The coach is keeping an eye on the weekend weather forecast but said the team has played in worse conditions.

“As far as the weekend goes, Saturday we’re talking 10 millimetres so we can easily handle that on diamond. It’s just a matter of getting [the diamonds] dry come Friday so they’re ready to go. We’ve done tournaments with much worse forecasts and much more rain than what they’re calling. If it stays true to forecast we’ll be OK.”

Beck said he was thankful for the community members volunteering their time to help fill positions for the tournament and hopes to see more support this weekend.

Weekend passes are available at the gate for $10 and the tournament is free for children 12 and under.

Opening ceremonies start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday then round robin play for the eight teams from around the province will start. Playoff games are all set for Sunday.

The Sox have their first game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and will face the Assiniboia Aces. On Saturday, the Sox play the Esterhazy Cyclones at 12:30 p.m. and the North East Wolfpack at 5:30 p.m.
