Food bank in need of non-perishable foods

Jul 26, 2019 | 11:52 AM

Food banks often see a drop in donations during the summer and leaves shelves empty and food hampers lean.

Manager Brennan Brander said the Door of Hope Food Bank is no different.

“It’s a bit low right now but we’ve had a few donations come and go,” Brander said. “There are a couple of months where it does slow down.”

While donations can be more irregular during the summer, Brander said more people have been asking for food hampers.

“There has been an increase,” Brander said. “From out of town too, like in Loon Lake, there has been an increase.”

The food bank is looking for non-perishable items like pasta, rice, oatmeal and canned foods. Brander said they can also take in fresher food like milk, eggs and yogurt.

“We can also take wild meat if it’s wrapped properly,” Brander said.

The Door of Hope Food Bank gives out an average of 25 hampers every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The hampers provide three days worth of food to people from Meadow Lake, Loon Lake and the surrounding communities.

Each hamper is packed with breakfast items, dairy products, non-perishables, meats and snacks for three meals a day. Baking items like sugar and flour are also placed in hampers when they are available.

“It’s always nice to get donations of any sort,” Brander said.

Donations can be dropped off at the Door of Hope on 105 2 Ave. E.
