July boasts double average rainfall

Aug 2, 2019 | 2:01 PM

While the amount of rainfall last month is above average, it isn’t setting any new records.

Meadow Lake sees an average of 72 mm of rain in July, however, this year, the precipitation was double that at 146 mm – the most amount of rain in July since 2008 when 195 mm fell.

Meadow Lake saw 80 mm of rain in June, which is above the norm of 66 mm.

Natalie Hasell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, said to expect more rain and thunderstorms into August.

“Summer is severe thunderstorm season,” Hasell said. “August is almost as busy as July in some years and [it will] probably go into September as well.”

Hasell reminds people with the increased rainfall, the risk of flooding also rises and it’s best to pack an emergency kit.

“One way you can be better prepared for scenarios where maybe the people who would be able to help you in an emergency can’t reach you because maybe the road is washed out or something is blocking the way,” Hasell said.

“Having an emergency kit can help you be at least be a little bit more comfortable on your own for three days because that’s how long it might take for them to reach you.”

Hasell advises to have one emergency kit for the home and one in the vehicle. For more information on what to pack in an emergency kit visit www.getprepared.gc.ca.
