Charity golf tournament in Goodsoil raises over $4,000 for local fire and rescue

Over 75 people hit the links in Goodsoil to raise money for their local fire department this past weekend.

Ken Olan, a member of the Goodsoil Fire and Rescue, said they raised about $4,200 at the Fundraiser Golf Tournament on Aug. 10. Olan is the co-owner of Northern Meadows Golf Club which hosted the tournament, silent auction and 50/50 draw for the past five years.

“People come out and support it quite well,” Olan said. “We started doing the fundraiser with the tournament and it’s been a good one for us. We’ve done some lottery tickets and sold those but the guys are ‘ticket-saled’ out whereas the tournament is a fun thing everybody can do and gets the community involved.”

Olan said the tournament receives support from several businesses in Meadow Lake, Goodsoil, Cold Lake and other members of the community.

“Our cabin owners that are in the area that have businesses and donate as well. Without that we couldn’t be doing all this so it’s important to recognize those people that do donate and support us. They know who they are,” Olan said.

The money raised will go towards buying and upgrading equipment for the volunteer firefighters. One item in particular Olan is looking forward to getting is two-way radios for the department.

“We have no way of communicating with each other, other than our phones. We found out in cases like Murray Doell that the phones don’t work very well. It was so overloaded that you couldn’t get a hold of anybody so we have to come up with something of our own,” Olan said.

Olan said there’s been some changes to the fire department in the last year, including the move to a new fire hall and buying another fire truck, but it all helps to build a better department to serve the northern part of the municipality.

“We’ve got a nice building now. We’ve got a rescue truck. We’ve got three fire trucks but two good ones and one old one. We’re starting to build things up. It’s nice to know that when we got out we’ve actually got equipment and trucks that we can use,” Olan said.
