Rainfall warning issued for portion of Northern Saskatchewan

Aug 16, 2019 | 12:00 PM

Even the ducks might complain about the latest forecast from Environment Canada.

The weather service issued a rainfall warning early Friday morning, predicting torrential rain to last until Sunday morning in the northwest’s province due to a low-pressure system.

“Rainfall is expected to be around 40-60 mm in general. Although, we do have some imbedded convection and probably imbedded thunderstorms in this system,” Environment Canada’s Natalie Hassell, a warning and preparedness meteorologist. “Locally, higher amounts (of rain) are expected.”

La Loche is one of the communities that are expected to be hardest hit. Cluff Lake Mine is also within the rainfall warning area.

While not in the danger area, the community of La Ronge can expect rain throughout the weekend in the range of 15-20 mm, with thunderstorms potentially bringing 35-40 mm.

Hassell encouraged residents in the rainfall warning areas to be cautious around low-lying areas, rivers, creeks and culverts as washouts may occur.
