Five Culture Share events are coming to the Battlefords and Meadow Lake between now and April 2020.

North West College secured a $10,000 Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) Grant to host the Cultural Share events between the Battlefords and Meadow Lake.

Coordinator of Industry Credit and Non-Credit Programs Michelle Kulyk said these events help foster a sense of community.

“The goal of these events is to bring together new Canadians, recent immigrants and First Nations communities not through formal education but through cultural activities such as dancing, art, and food. Sharing cultural practices is an extremely effective way to break down barriers and dismantle stereotypes. Sharing culture also involves sharing food—something everyone loves,” she said.

The first of five events will be taking place at their Meadow Lake Campus this weekend during the Meadow Lake Cultural Days on September 27 to 29.

Business Development Manager Miles Nachbaur previewed their event coming up on Sunday.

“Our event is the one on Sunday. You will be able to come in and there will be booths with people showing their culture. We will have songs and stories and a little bit of food as a part of people’s culture,” he said.

Nachbaur explained they have students who come through their campuses that have all sorts of different backgrounds and cultures.

“It is celebrating all the different diversity we have in our communities. It is important to acknowledge that that diversity exists and give people a chance to discover where people come from and what is important to them. It was important to us to be a part of that,” he said.

The college will be open Sunday, September 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to explore culture through crafts, dance, fun, food, stories and more.
