Meadow Lake may see municipal tax rise

Nov 26, 2019 | 9:09 AM

Meadow Lake could see an increase in municipal taxes for 2020.

Council continued budget deliberations on Nov. 25 as one of their top items on the agenda.

The proposed tax increase could be approximately 1.6 per cent to two per cent which may be attributed to a reservoir pump that requires replacement in the city`s Hydrovac truck and replacement of a fire truck for the community. Those items are some of the city’s highest expenditures this year.

The City of Meadow Lake noted an unexpected hike of between 12 and 16 per cent on their group insurance rates.

Other costs facing taxpayers include infrastructure maintenance, removal of graffiti near Lion`s Park, and the repair to the horse statue which turns 100 next year.

Council also learned the city is near a $62,000 deficit which could still perpetuate into 2021 but there are budget cuts of $97,280. Notable cuts are to expenses to the arena maintenance and its budget, and an overlay to the Lion`s Park track. That project could happen in 2021.

None of those items have been finalised though council says the budget will be signed off on Dec. 9th.
