Budget 2020

Meadow Lake City Council signs off on 2020 budget

Dec 10, 2019 | 9:09 AM

The City of Meadow Lake has wrapped up the 2020 budget and the region will see an increase in municipal taxes at 1.6 per cent.

Council deliberated for months on the outcome of Monday’s budget meeting where it was decided the city’s biggest expenditures in the new year will be road paving and the purchase of a used vac-truck.

“[The city] has the challenge to attract people, we need to keep moving to maintain where we’re at,” said Coun. Glen Winkler at the meeting.

Coun. Richard Levesque was against raising taxes as he noted the recent partnership with SaskWater will slightly increase water rates.

“Water rates are going up a bit and if we don’t keep up were going to fall behind. We’d have to dig ourselves out five years down the road. Water rates are still the lowest in the province,” said Mayor Merlin Seymour.

Meadow Lake has kept rates modestly low compared to other municipalities in the province in the previous year.

Historical data shows the following rate increases for Meadow Lake:

2014 – four per cent

2015 – three per cent

2016 – two per cent

2017 – two per cent

2018 – 1.9 per cent

2019 – 2.4 per cent

2020 – 1.6 per cent

The next council meeting is Jan.13.
