Mitch Picton re-signs with Riders, Noah Picton rejoins Rams

Two members of the Picton family were in the news Wednesday.

First, the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders announced they had re-signed receiver Mitch Picton.

Then, the University of Regina Rams announced they had added Noah Picton — Mitch’s cousin and one of his former teammates with the Rams — to their staff as quarterbacks coach.

Mitch Picton was selected by the Roughriders in the fifth round (37th overall) of the 2017 draft.

He made his CFL regular-season debut in 2019 and appeared in two games. He didn’t catch a pass.

Picton spent five seasons with the Rams, recording 172 catches for 2,592 yards and 24 touchdowns in regular-season and playoff games. He was named a Canada West all-star and U Sports first-team All-Canadian in 2016.

Over at the U of R, Noah Picton joins the staff of the team with which he starred for five seasons.

The winner of the Hec Crighton Trophy as the top player in Canadian university of football in 2016, he left the Rams as the all-time U Sports leader with 11,494 passing yards and Canada West’s all-time leader with 1,235 completions.

His 71 touchdown passes rank second in school and Canada West history, behind Teale Orban’s 76.

Picton attended CFL training camps with the Roughriders (2015) and Toronto Argonauts (2018 and 2019).

“We’re extremely happy to be able to add Noah, who’s obviously been such a big part of this program for the past seven seasons,” Rams head coach Steve Bryce said in a media release.

“He set such a great example as a player and a leader during his time with the Rams, and he’s the perfect guy for our group of young, talented quarterbacks to learn from.”

NOTES: The Roughriders also announced they had re-signed defensive lineman Mathieu Breton, whom Saskatchewan selected in the fifth round (36th overall) of the 2018 draft. Breton spent most of the 2018 season on the Roughriders’ practice roster and attended training camp with them last season.
