The Meadow Lake Woodlanders Junior Forest Wardens (MLWJFW) are gearing up for some winter skills training and celebrating their upcoming 20th anniversary in Meadow Lake.

Neil Marsh, fire chief and coordinator of MLWJFW, told meadowlakeNOW, kids aged six to 18 can participate in winter camps while learning to rough it in the woods.

“We do woodworking, snowshoeing, canoeing, orienteering and much more. A large emphasis is placed on developing basic skills such as the use of fire for cooking and keeping warm, the use of tools such as knives and axes, first aid among many others,” Marsh said in an email.

According to the organization’s past president, Roger Madaire, the four pillars of the program include outdoor skills, leadership, forestry and ecology.

“We educate people in the use of the outdoors in every manner that doesn’t destroy. We never encourage the use of ATV’s or off-roading as part of our program,” Madaire told meadowlakeNOW.

Marsh will be leading both February and March camps.

“Families can join at any time, although the club year runs from September through June. Parents participate along with their kids, and learn as much as the kids do,” Marsh added.

Registration for both February and March camps can be found here.
