RCMP warn western Sask. communities after string of break-ins

The RCMP have put out a crime watch advisory after a string of break-ins in multiple communities west of Saskatoon.

According to Biggar’s RCMP Detachment Commander Dereck Crozier, the spree has hit Unity, Lashburn, Paynton, Kerrobert and Biggar so far.

“We ended up with a couple of suspects came into town with a white truck pulling an empty flatbed trailer and broke in to the Biggar arena. They basically broke into every room mostly looking for cash boxes, food items and liquor. From there they carried on and broke into one of our grocery stores and managed to get away with a large amount of cigarette cartons,” he said.

“What captured our attention is having the video surveillance from the arena—the truck and trailer in question was the same truck and trailer that the night before had broken into the Lashburn post office, then into the Paynton post office as well as a bowling alley out in those areas.”

Crozier believes the suspects have already stolen around $20,000 in goods and are targeting a specific type of business in western Saskatchewan communities.

“Right now it does seem like there has been a target especially with post offices in some of our smaller towns. In this case here they did not touch the Biggar post office this night but did hit our arena and grocery store,” he said. “It seems to be concentrated on the northwest side of the province. Other than that we are still up in the air, we don’t know what direction (they’re going) but it could be anywhere from Lloydminster to Swift Current.”

Crozier advises anyone who lives in that area to keep a lookout for suspicious activity and give the police a call if they see anything out of the ordinary.
