GDI award recipient encourages women in trades

Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research (GDI), announced it will induct 25 individuals into the Order of Gabriel Dumont at GDI’s upcoming 40th Anniversary Cultural and Educational Conference.

Two bronze recipients from Meadow Lake include Dayna Georges and Rosine Thibault.

MeadowlakeNOW caught up with Dayna Georges, 29, who is originally from Pinehouse Lake. Georges said she knew she wanted to be a heavy duty mechanic during her high school years.

“I have a 13-year-old son and that’s one of the main reasons why I started my journey. I wanted him to see that if he works hard enough, he can be anything he wants to be,” Georges said.

Georges’ program took slightly longer to complete because she was raising a child and expecting a baby. She said she has her parents and family to thank for their support and GDI for approving funding to fulfil her dream.

The order is awarded “to persons who have distinguished themselves with outstanding service to the Métis of Canada,” Geordy McCaffrey, GDI’s executive director said in a press release. “It is one of the Métis Nation’s highest civilian honours awarded to Métis and non-Métis individuals based on their achievements and lifetime contributions.”

Georges encourages women to pursue trades. She says she loves her role as a heavy duty equipment technician journeymen and feels equal to her fellow colleagues.

The recognition is for students and alumni who have distinguished themselves through leadership, community involvement, and overall performance.

MeadowlakeNOW reached out to Rosine Thibeault for comment but was unable to reach her in time for deadline.
