Newly renovated Early Years Resource Centre looking for community involvement

Jan 16, 2020 | 1:20 PM

Meadow Lake Early Years Resource Centre renovations are complete and its neighbour, KidsFirst is hosting two engagement events to involve the community in the centre’s planning process.

Lori Albert, program manager with KidsFirst told meadowlakeNOW the Early Years Resource Centre received $215,000 in provincial funding. She said she would like to see local input to understand how KidsFirst can make the centre fit the community’s vision and still meet provincial funding requirements.

“Funding requirements through the province require four parts or ‘pillars’ to funding which include early learning, healthy child development, family wellness and information and referrals. We’ve included logistics as the fifth pillar ensuring people have a voice,” Albert said.

The meetings will involve discussion around the best time to keep the Early Years Resource Centre open and a vision for the space itself.

“We think evening hours and hours when schools are closed, [and] school holidays are important for us to be open so families have access to places to go and play while interacting with other families,” Albert said.

The Early Years Resource Centre promises to be accessible to all families in the community and hopes to be an inviting place for families to connect with supports and agencies, if needed.

“I think it will be a hub, a place where people are comfortable dropping in. There will be a place that’s fun for children to play in and parents will get some information if they want it,” Albert said.

The centre is slated to open mid-February though a date is not yet confirmed.

Albert noted the Early Years Resource Centre is hiring a qualified coordinator.

Information sessions are on Jan.16 from 2 p.m to 4 p.m or an evening session from 5 p.m to 7p.m
