Kinsmen Burger Battle pits local eateries against each other for a cause

Jan 23, 2020 | 5:35 PM

Meadow Lake Kinsmen Club is challenging local restaurants to come up with the best burger combo in town.

Geoff Barton, vice president of the Meadow Lake Kinsmen Club told meadowlakeNOW, the city’s first Burger Battle will garner donations for the local Telemiracle fundraiser.

“What we’re hoping to have is local restaurants, for a few weeks in February, to have a special burger and fries combo for sale,” Barton said. “They’ll compete against each other to see who can create the best burger combo.”

Barton said $2 from the sale of each “Kin-combo” will go to Telemiracle efforts.

He went on to say Sandi’s Poutinerie & Grill, Devour Grill and Bar, and Eatery on Main are all on board so far to compete.

“Telemiracle is in its 44th year and it’s a big project across the province. It’s a telethon that raises money for the Kinsmen Foundation which in turn helps provide funding for travel or medical equipment for families in need in Saskatchewan,” he said.

Last year $39,000 was raised through Meadow Lake’s Telemiracle.

“The story behind the Meadow Lake version, or so the story goes, is the first year the Meadow Lake Club went to the big show in Regina, the second year, due to poor weather, the Kinsmen couldn’t go so they decided to do something locally instead,” Barton said. “It’s snowballed to the point where we do a miniature version of the same thing here at the Civic Centre.”

The Telemiracle falls on March 7 and 8.

“Feb. 20 celebrates Founders Day and marks 100 years of Kin Clubs across the country. The city of Meadow Lake is going to declare Kin-Week between Feb 16 to 22 which lines up with the Burger Battle and leads us into Telemiracle,” Barton said.

The Burger Battle campaign will run from Feb. 16 to 29.

Barton said the Burger Battle is open to any restaurant who is up for the challenge. Get in touch with Meadow Lake Kinsmen Club here.
