The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) awarded an honourable mention to Meadow Lake MLA, Jeremy Harrison in its Golden Scissor Awards.

The accolade recognizes politicians, public servants, or other Canadians who have shown leadership in cutting red tape for businesses.

Harrison told meadowlakeNOW he was honoured for his web portal Help Cut Red Tape which helps business owners fast track their red tape concerns.

“We launched the website a year ago as an option for those who feel impacted by red tape to submit concerns to government for review,” he said. “The objective was to make sure concerns that taxpayers had, would have a venue and a forum where those concerns could be submitted to us, as one of many tools.”

When I was enterprise minister in 2010, we put forward a comprehensive plan in which we would review business-related regulation and make sure we were proactive in having a plan and a system in which those regulations would be reviewed,” he said.

Harrison said a 10-year rolling plan is in place where business-related regulations are reviewed by a cabinet committee. Stakeholders who are impacted by those regulations have opportunity to submit feedback and suggestions as to what might work better.

“This isn’t about getting rid of regulation or standards, it’s about making sure compliance and streamlining as much as possible is what we’re looking at doing,” he said.

He said his team reviewed hundreds of regulations and broader policy reviews on liquor and wildlife regulations and owed significant change to policies from reviews

“It’s a reflection that this government takes red tape reduction seriously. We take concerns from the public and we want to hear what those concerns are,” he said.
