Cardlock rations continue as Co-op seeks court injunction against Unifor blockade

Meadow Lake Co-op fuel Cardlock station is feeling the effects of Unifor’s labour dispute.

Caralee Strome, general manager with Meadow Lake Co-op, told meadowlakeNOW Cardlock stations will experience rations until blockades are dismantled from the Carseland Fuel Terminal.

“Diesel is limited to 300/litres per card per day, gas is limited to 100/litres per card per day,” she said. ”There hasn’t been any action here in Meadow Lake but we are impacted because we can’t get fuel.”

Strome said the labour dispute is approaching its third month though a recent injunction application may have blockades coming down sooner than expected.

“Things were happening where they weren’t letting trucks come through,” she said. “There was a court injunction [in Regina] where the refinery could take 10 minutes of the trucker’s time before letting them into the refinery.”

“The Carseland Fuel Terminal is the Co-op terminal where fuel is stored and we get our fuel from there. Once the blockade comes down, hopefully they can haul fuel from the Carseland Terminal,” she said.

In a statement released Wednesday, Federated Co-operatives Limited say they are seeking a second attempt toward an injunction order that will address Unifor’s blockade of the Carseland Fuel Terminal where local stations obtain fuel.

“Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) has stated clearly that it will not negotiate the Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC) collective bargaining agreement with Unifor again while the union maintains illegal blockades at CRC and other FCL facilities. In spite of this, Unifor has continued to blockade the CRC in Regina and, for the past two weeks, at FCL’s Carseland Fuel Terminal near Calgary,” FCL said in a statement issued Wednesday.

Strome said it is unknown what the effects of fuel rations could be on local Co-op gas bars.

“I hope things get return to normal, the blockades come down and that we can ensure and provide fuel to our member customers,” she said.
