The Saskatchewan Horse Federation announced five individuals will be inducted into the SHF Hall of Fame in 2020. One of the five inaugural inductees being recognized is Loon Lake’s own, Raymond Mitsuing.

Flo Lavallie, Mitsuing’s nominator, told meadowlakeNOW she wanted Raymond to be recognized for his humble demeanor toward the public and his animals.

“I feel the horse industry really needs to be celebrated because years ago, there were very few horses in rural Saskatchewan. Now the horse industry has really increased and treatment of the horse has really come of age,” she said.

Lavallie, a long-time friend of Mitsuing, shared a wagon with his wife Josephine at last year’s Calgary Stampede.

“Nine horses of his won the Equine Outfit of Excellence award and he is a seven-time winner of the Canadian Professional Chuck Wagon Association Championship,” she said. “He has also won a safe driver award. This gentleman has such a legacy to leave to his two boys, Dale and Devin.”

According to SHF, Mitsuing is one of the legends in the sport of chuck wagon racing.

“Ray was among the top 10 in the Canadian Professional Chuck wagon Association standings for the last 12 years and is a three-time winner of the Prairie Racing Series Championship Trailer,” a statement from SHF said.

“Ray has over 30 years of wagon racing and won the Canadian Championships seven times. Ray is a proud member of the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, where he served as chief for 16 years. He also serves on the Senate of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations. Ray is known as a role model throughout the North American racing circuit as well as to many within his community.”

Audrey Price, Executive Director of the SHF said an individual, couples, multi-generational families who have carried on the legacy, or a horse can be eligible for an award.

“It’s really is about recognizing and celebrating Saskatchewan residents and horses who made a significant contribution to the province’s history,” she said.

Price added even though halls of fame exist, nothing which was created to honour the equestrian and horse.

“I think it’s so important that we recognize the animal that was a significant contributor to the first settlers who came in and worked the land, and also to First Nation’s culture and to the people who persevered and bred the animals. I’m very happy and pleased the organization is going to recognize them,” she said.

The Saskatchewan Horse Federation (SHF) Hall of Fame, established last year, honours and celebrates Saskatchewan residents and horses who have contributed to the growth and awareness of the role horses play in the province’s culture, agriculture, industry and sport.
