Heavy snow creates difficult driving conditions

Mar 7, 2020 | 7:24 PM

For the second consecutive weekend motorists in parts of north central Saskatchewan were contending with hazardous weather.

Heavy snowfall combined with falling temperatures and wind was creating very challenging conditions with near whiteout scenarios in places.

For the Meadow Lake area early Saturday evening the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline said travel was not recommended because of the heavy snow, although that advisory was rescinded later in the evening.

Also through late Saturday the hotline reported loose snow, swirling snow, and drifting snow in the Battlefords; reduced visibility and icy and slippery sections in the Tisdale area.

Prince Albert and La Ronge faced similar conditions with loose snow and swirling snow further to the north.

As always, motorists are advised to refer to the hotline at: http://hotline.gov.sk.ca

The snowfall warning in place across the entire region remained in place for the remainder of the weekend. The snow was forecast to persist throughout Saturday night, then taper off from west to east on Sunday. Snowfall amounts were expected to end up in the 10 to 20 cm range, with up to 25 cm through the Melfort, Nipawin, and Hudson Bay areas.
