Meadow Lake Historical Society mailed potential artifact

Mar 9, 2020 | 2:19 PM

The Meadow Lake and District Museum and Historical Society received a map of the region in the mail believed to be over 100 years old.

Millie Henderson, historical society member told meadowlakeNOW, a man who the Historical Society has never met from the United Kingdom, mailed the map to the museum after finding the alleged artifact folded up in an old book.

“It is detailed down to where there is good hunting for moose, where there are trees, good soil and he also marked a place which said was his proposed homestead, which was West of his uncles. Both of those homesteads were straight North of the Flying Dust reserve,” she said.

According to Henderson, the map is dated back to 1904 and was reprinted in 1908. She said historical society says they cannot make out the individual’s name who sent the map, whether it is Sharington, Shirling, or Shilling though have plans to contact the man through his return mailing address.

“We don’t know if it’s from an elderly gentleman or a nephew of a former resident,” she said. Cecil Midgett, historical society treasurer, said the map has yet to be assessed by experts though she has plans to delve into the map’s history in the coming weeks.

“We’ve only had it for a few weeks and we just never thought about digging into it that far. It was just something we received and we’re displaying it,” she said.

The map is currently in a display case and nailed to the wall. The society said it has only been in their possession for two weeks.

The Meadow Lake Museum is slated to open May 16 though staff will conduct private tours during winter months.
