JH Moore plans to keep kids active during school closures

Mar 18, 2020 | 1:30 PM

JH Moore Elementary School is making sure kids are active and spending time outdoors before the Northwest School Division 203 closes its school doors on Friday for one week as a precautionary measure against COVID-19.

Secretary, Brenda Skinner, told meadowlakeNOW, the school is offering snowshoe rentals for staff and local families to stay active during the closure.

“For these kids that need to be outside and doing things with family, we offer this service for kids and families who would borrow them during this time of being isolated,” Skinner said.

The school has 40 pair of snowshoes to keep kids active though will not be renting other physical education equipment to families to use during social distancing. The school has sizes for children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 and sizes for Grades 4 to 6 on hand.

Skinner said the snowshoes were purchased through a parents’ fundraising initiative. She said staff are thrilled to offer the service to families.

“We hope during this time they’re borrowed for a few days and then returned,” she said.

Kaitlyn Harman, communications officer with Northwest School Division, said the division is working internally and waiting for direction from the government response planning team for education and on additional activity programs.

“They’re going to be working over the next days and weeks to set up a plan for supplementary programming and we’re going to follow their lead,” she said. “There will be some type of programming, we’re not entirely sure what that looks like yet.”

JH Moore School is open March 18 and 19 though will be closed on Friday for a one-week period. The school will accept returned rentals after schools re-open.

The school is asking for a $20 deposit for snowshoe rentals as has a limited supply remaining.
