A local resident is gathering household items for a young family who suffered significant property loss during a house fire.

The Meadow Lake Fire and Rescue responded to a blaze at 710 1st Street East on Monday evening. No one was injured.

Fire Chief, Neil Marsh, told meadowlakeNOW in an email, the incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on March 23 when responders discovered a fire in the roof space of an old, story-and-a-half single detached home.

“The fire department was on scene for nearly six hours,” Marsh said. “Steps are taken to support the affected residents, by the fire department, their insurance company, the Red Cross, and potentially
others such as the Salvation Army, Social Services and the community at large.”

Melanie Bear lives nearby and witnessed first responders on the scene.

Bear told meadowlakeNOW she’s looking for community donations to help the family get back on their feet after their home and possessions were damaged during the blaze.

“It was a wakeup call of how you can lose everything in an instant,” she said.

Bear said it is an unfortunate time to be going through a loss, especially during a pandemic and economic uncertainty. She is now looking for community support to recover some items the family may have lost.

Bear asked anyone in the community who is able to donate, to get in touch with her through Facebook or email at mellowbear423@gmail.com.
