A northern Saskatchewan community is mourning the death of a woman whom family members say lost her battle with COVID-19.

Krystal Maurice expressed her grief about the passing of her mom, Nelda Maurice, in a social media post Tuesday morning.

“Off to the funeral home. Felt like it was a dream. Oh my god my heart is so broken,” Krystal wrote. “Thank you all for your support and generosity during this time, we greatly appreciate it.”

Nelda Maurice, 64, was a resident of Ile-a-la-Crosse.

A Facebook post on Sunday night by family members announced they were saying their final goodbye to Maurice on Monday afternoon at a Saskatoon hospital.

“Nelda has been in the hospital for some time due to the COVID-19 virus and there is nothing more that the medical providers can do for her,” wrote Beckie Rose Daigneault, Nelda’s niece.

More than $6,000 has been raised to help the family with funeral expenses.

The death has not yet been confirmed by the Saskatchewan Health Authority. When confirmed, it will be the eighth fatality related to the virus in the province during the pandemic.
