OFF-SALE LIQUOR STORE

Meadow Lake Co-op makes zoning application for liquor off-sale facility

Jun 25, 2020 | 12:20 PM

Meadow Lake Co-op Service Centre hardware store has made a proposal to city council to incorporate a stand-alone liquor facility to its existing property.

At the most recent council meeting on June 22, city council discussed Co-op’s request to amend the zoning bylaw which would allow for more than one principal building on a lot in specific retail situations.

“Their first intent was to use the shop but then as [measurements were taken] the design didn’t make sense anymore and I think that’s where the [board] was looking more into a stand-alone [facility],” Councillor Ron Dishko said at the meeting.

In an email, city manager Diana Burton said at this stage, council is drafting an amendment to the Zoning Bylaw. The amendment itself must be advertised and considered by council. Members agreed to revisit the bylaw at the July 27 council meeting.

Co-op management says it is looking ahead to make sure there is adequate time to prepare and go through necessary processes to ensure the facility aligns with city requirements.

Caralee Strome, general manager of Meadow Lake Co-op told meadowlakeNOW the facility will depend on whether the rezoning bylaw can be rewritten to allow their plans to move forward.

“We’ve discussed opening another liquor operation,” she said. “This is to have another building on our Service Centre site. It would be a separate store.”

Strome added the facility will only offer liquor retail and intends to operate as an off-sale with extended hours from government-run operations in the city.

A public hearing will be held at the August 24 meeting.
