Northwest Community Lodge Association breaks ground on dream home project

Jul 29, 2020 | 11:41 AM

The Northwest Community Lodge Association (NCLA) members were pleased to break ground today at 20 Gibson Crescent for its dream home project.

The city donated the land to build the dream home. Once sold, its proceeds will cover the long term care facility’s furniture, fixtures and equipment.

NCLA board member Alannah Farr told meadowlakeNOW the home will feature five bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. There will be one attached garage along with an additional detached double garage space at the rear of the property. The site is available for sale now, if the purchaser is interested in customizing finishes and upgrades.

Farr said the fundraising project will lead to more supports at the new long term care facility.

“I’m a nurse at the lodge and I feel that the new facility will accommodate the residents much better,” Farr said. “The NCLA needs big projects like this. Now that the new facility is underway, we’ve seen a lot of community support come together.”

In addition to the land, council agreed the City of Meadow Lake would also loan $250,000 toward the home build.

“We amended our bylaw allowing to loan money to the NCLA,” Mayor Merlin Seymour said. “Normally the city does not do this but because it’s a city-funded project. Whatever isn’t raised for the long term care facility though the NCLA, the city and the R.M. have to pay for it.”

Al and Chris MacFarlane of Meadow Lake Properties will build the house and its completion will be in partnership with several construction firms in the area. The projected completion date is January 2021.

“Together we think that we can raise $400,000 to go towards the long term care facility,” Al MacFarlane said. “Meadow Lake Properties has been building homes in the area for the past 15 years as well as things like the Multiworks group homes and offices. The community has been good to us and it is good that we have an opportunity to give back to the community in our area of expertise.”

The property is exclusively listed meaning it is not visible on the public MLS site. Catharine Aldous with ReMax Meadow Lake is the listing agent for the property and can be reached at (306) 240-8878.

A number of community partners have donated to the project including Brander Bros., Dorintosh Septic Service, and Ace Lumber.

In addition to this project, the NCLA is hosting a charity golf tournament on Aug. 15 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
