Meadow Lake and area residents encouraged to report suspicious illegal activity

Jul 30, 2020 | 3:40 PM

Meadow Lake RCMP is encouraging residents to take back their neighbourhoods by reporting problem residences or businesses used for illegal activities.

Maryah Walker, Meadow Lake’s Community Police Officer (CPO) said the provincial Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Act empowers landlords, tenants and residents in a community to look out for one another by reporting suspicious illegal acts.

“The intention is to reduce illegal activity,” Walker told meadowlakeNOW. “Maybe you’re suspicious that person is trafficking drugs out of their home, or you’re suspicious because there’s illegal activity going on. [SCAN is] not for nuisance of noisy neighbours, it’s for illegal activity only.”

Potential illegal activity could include drugs, prostitution, gang or criminal activities, child sexual abuse or illegal alcohol sales.

If you have a concern, you should not attempt to investigate on your own, or approach anyone on the property, Walker said. While some of these activities may not be immediately occurring in Meadow Lake, citizens are encouraged to work with RCMP to help create safer a community.

Walker explained said neighbours can report illegal activity to the specialized branch of provincial services. SCAN enables residence to report concerns confidentially with investigators who will follow up.

“It’s really just another opportunity or another layer for partnership within our community to keep our community safer,” she said.

During Walker’s experience in other communities, she said the program was a great success in partnering with leadership and community members to combat illegal drug activity or illegal alcohol sales.

“RCMP are only aware of what they’re made aware of,” Walker said. “We all play a role in creating a safe community and this program is another mechanism for allowing citizens to take back their community in terms of safety and what they would like their community to look like.”

Local property manager Alana Brander with Brander Properties said fortunately, she has not experienced much illegal activity at her local residences though encourages everyone to keep each other safe. She said would like to see youth more prepared in situations to report illegal activity and non-emergencies.

If there is activity that’s creating a nuisance to enjoyment of property, that is a mischief complaint which is reported to 310-RCMP.
