Parents and little-ones are invited to join Meadow Lake Early Years Family Resource Center (EYFRC), Early Childhood Services and KidsFirst for a three-day literacy event in Meadow Lake.

A Walk in the Park is a literacy story walk geared toward kids ages one to five. Jenny Billette, facilitator with Meadow Lake’s EYFRC said the event is funded by KidsFirst in partnership with Meadow Lake and Area Early Child Services, and Meadow Lake Family Resource Centre (FRC). The event will look slightly different this year due to the pandemic.

“We’ll be using the book The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear,” she told meadowlakeNOW. “We’re taking six pages of the book and each page will consists of an activity at six different booths.”

Kids can expect to make a mouse mask, a bear puppet, find a strawberry in a sandbox among many other crafts and activities to promote literacy, encourage parent child interaction and child development.

Six booths will contain one activity and will be overseen by staff from ECIP, FRC, and KidsFirst.

According to the City of Meadow Lake website, stringent safety precautions will be in place. families will be booked every 15 minutes ensure there is not an influx of families at one time. Booths will be spaced to promote social distancing. There will only be one family allowed at each booth at a time. Children will not be permitted to take part without an adult present.

There will be hand sanitizer at each station. All craft supplies will be individually packaged and not reused. Staff will ensure all surfaces are sanitized with a bleach solution between families.

There will be no food at the event. Staff members will be screened before beginning each day and will not be permitted to work if they exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19. Families will be screened prior to beginning the story walk and will not be permitted to participate if they are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19.

“We’ll have daily door prizes at the end of three days,” she said. “Come out and enjoy yourself with your family.”

Regional KidsFirst Literacy Event Story Walk will take place at Elks Park at 401 2nd St West in Meadow Lake.

The event will be held Monday Aug. 17 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday Aug. 19 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
