Housing Authority Board

Local volunteers needed on Board of Meadow Lake Housing Authority

Aug 24, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The Meadow Lake Housing Authority Board is currently seeking volunteers.

Jessica Walters, clerk with the City of Meadow Lake said local volunteers can help provide further information and input into provincial housing services.

“Board members need to be residents of the communities served by the board, and ideally also reflect a range of perspectives and experiences that represent the community as a whole,” Walters said in an email to meadowlakeNOW. “[The Board] will make decisions about the way seniors and social housing programs are provided in the community.”

Andrew Dinsmore, spokesperson with the Ministry of Social Services said local housing authorities are not for profit agencies created to deliver programs and services on behalf of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) at the community level.

“Each housing authority has a contract with SHC to manage the SHC-owned housing projects/portfolio in its community. These contracts do not transfer ownership. SHC continues to control the housing programs, the housing projects/portfolio, and the associated records,” Dinsmore said.

Housing authorities are created by Ministerial Order, and are governed by a local, volunteer board of directors appointed by the minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. A local nominating committee makes recommendations to the minister of potential candidates for the board. A housing authority board may delegate specific responsibilities to a manager, but it remains accountable for actions taken by or on behalf of the housing authority.

Unita Esau, board member with Meadow Lake Housing Authority, said local people should have a vested interest in advancing their community.

“A board role is to make decisions on behalf of the organization and oversight of the organization,” she said.

Each housing authority board is responsible for liaising with the community to ensure people know about SHC’s housing programs and services and understand how easy it is to apply for housing and ensuring all applicants have fair and equal access to housing. The board also works with tenants who need rent adjustments, advice on budgeting, or other supports/accommodations.

Additional board responsibilities include working with service agencies to provide support programs for tenants; Providing a safe environment for tenants, employees, contractors, and the public; Delivering SHC’s programs with care and ensuring SHC’s housing projects are protected and maintained.

Initial terms are for three years with monthly meetings.
