Saskatchewan Roughrider Day set for Sunday

The Saskatchewan Roughriders won’t be playing host to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Labour Day Classic on Sunday, but the Green and White will be throwing a bash at Mosaic Stadium just the same.

The provincial government has proclaimed Sunday “Saskatchewan Roughrider Day” in celebration of the team’s 110th anniversary season.

“The Labour Day Classic is always one of the most exciting games of the year for Roughrider fans across the province,” Craig Reynolds, the CFL team’s president and CEO, said in a media release.

“We wanted to find a way to continue to bring the energy and excitement this weekend is known for even though we aren’t able to gather in our traditional way. Instead, I’m thrilled that we’ll be able to rally Rider Nation around Saskatchewan Roughrider Day, reminding us all that even apart we remain connected in our love for this team.”

The 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19 and the coronavirus will have an impact on Sunday’s celebration as well. Events will be held online and during a drive-through in the Mosaic Stadium parking lot from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Members of the Roughriders alumni are to be on hand and there are to be giveaways and displays from the team’s partners. Fans can remain in their cars while the Roughriders’ staff, alumni and volunteers remain physically distanced.

Tickets are free, but the event is limited to 600 vehicles (200 per hour). More information on tickets and other features is available at Riderville.com.

“This day is really for all of Rider Nation as a way to celebrate the Green and White, but most importantly it’s a way for us to say thank you for all of our fans who have stuck by our side,” Reynolds said in the release. “Next year I am hopeful we will celebrate Labour Day like we always do — by beating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.”
