Wounded Warriors Weekend fundraising in Meadow Lake

Sep 3, 2020 | 5:14 PM

Fundraising for the Wounded Warriors Weekend Foundation continues this weekend in Meadow Lake.

Tickets for the boat raffle and 50/50 will be available either the Co-op Food Store and C Store for most of September Long, starting at noon on Friday at the Food Store. The funds from the raffle support veterans and emergency responders who struggle from post traumatic stress disorder. Spokesperson Gordon Joyes said they’ve done well in fundraising this summer despite the slow start.

“Had a good trip in the southern part of the province and [we’re on] track for the goal of $20,000,” Joyes said. “We should surpass it this weekend.”

That trip didn’t come without it’s hangups, however, a driver running a red light in Yorkton ended up T-boning the trailer Joyes was driving that was hauling the main prize of the raffle, the boat. Fortunately, that wasn’t harmed during the collision.

“It didn’t damage the boat or anything, but the trailer was a write-off,” Joyes said.

The gatherings at Camp Independence, the designated site for the non-profit’s retreats, have gone well, despite having to take in a smaller number of people due to COVID-19 precautions. Participants came from Alberta, Saskatchewan and some eastern provinces.

“They all had a good time and a couple of service dogs were given away,” Joyes said. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Joyes said he hopes to get into the Regina and Swift Current area soon this fall, to drum up a bit more support before the full fall season is in swing. However, he’s also happy to simply raise awareness.

“Getting the word out there about what we’re doing, stuff like that.”

Anyone looking to buy tickets can find the Wounded Warriors Weekend Foundation booth at the Co-op Food Store till 6 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.
