Meadow Lake city council to hold meeting to address sewer service upgrade concerns

Sep 9, 2020 | 5:14 PM

The City of Meadow Lake is calling on residents to provide their input about recent sewer service upgrades.

The construction of the new lift station on Seventh Avenue East has caused some concerns about what costs property owners might be expected to pay for future upgrades to full sewer service.

In 2019, the city received a grant for a $20 million upgrade to sewer services over the next 10 years and make the infrastructure more resilient to future flooding. Phase one of the project is the new lift station currently under construction.

City manger Diana Burton said the meeting will be a forum for council to hear from residents and to discuss any comments or concerns to formulate a recommendation as to how this project will be funded.

“During phase one, some residents wanted to know the cost of hooking up to the sewer infrastructure on the east side and how much of those costs will be their responsibility versus how much will be covered by the city,” Burton told meadowlakeNOW in an email. “[Residents also wanted to know] how much will be offset by the Disaster Mitigation funding we received from the federal government.”

City staff have sent invitations to residents currently on light sewer to attend the meeting to discuss questions, concerns and ideas as well as present some funding options the city is investigating in response to the feedback already received.

The meeting will be hosted virtually to accommodate size limits on in-person meetings and in an effort to make the meeting more accessible for residents.

The meeting will be on September 21 at 5:30 p.m. All residents who are currently on light sewer services are invited to participate.
